The Moulton Mosaic

On 5th July 2012, the Olympic Torch passed through Spalding, Moulton, Whaplode, Holbeach and Long Sutton on its way to the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics on 27th July.

South Holland District Council Arts Development Team commissioned local artist Fiona Gurney to work with teacher Pete Buddle and Art & Design students from the University Academy of Holbeach to design and make five mosaics to mark this occasion. Their brief was to design five individual mosaics that were specific to their intended location but had a consistent theme that linked them all together. Throughout May and June 2012, Fiona ran workshops across the district enabling whole communities to make the mosaics.

The five mosaics all feature a sport from the Olympic Games; rhythmic gymnastics is portrayed on the Moulton mosaic. Moulton Mill is easily identifiable on the left-hand side of the picture, and the jeweled effect in the bottom right-hand corner represents the Olympic torch itself, which is featured on all five panels, as it passed through the district.
